PE 1: Goals + Activities

Goals
  • To better distinguish the difference between long vowels, glides, and double consonant sounds.
  • To increase my conversational fluency, and to use the correct pitch and rhythm when speaking.
Activities
  • Practice speaking the current chapter's vocabulary 3 times a week.
  • Speak to fluent Japanese speakers for at least an hour a week: the Sensees, friends in Princeton, Skyping friends in Tokyo, et al.

Self Introduction :D

My なかま textbook just made a new ともだち! This is exciting; fluent にほんご speakers are crawling out of the woodwork in ぷりんせとん.  All the better to practice with!

And I'm finally done fiddling with the blog template; I had greater and more noble intentions of filling the HTML with links to ねこ pictures -- alas, I'm too lazy to figure out how to host images, while my unfinished schoolwork calls to me.  My background image is a piece by Takashi Murakami, one of my favorite Japanese contemporary artists, and who's very popular all over にほん. Stay tuned for the self-introduction and PE work - I need to find some group members for peer review!!

はじめまして! Chua ですどうぞよろしく

I spent my past summer in Japan and can count myself as one of the smitten - the food!!! The architecture!! It was hard to pack up and come back to Princeton...

I'm making plans to go back to work in Tokyo after I graduate next year, and knowing some real nihongo will certainly help! While I picked up a very little bit of nihongo during my stay there, I'd love to learn more; it'll also be interesting to compare learning through immersion and classroom situations.

The most challenging thing about the class are the time demands and my inability to wake up early every morning, as my other classes generally require very late nights... Still, I'm determined to make the most of this opportunity; this is my last year in school ever, so I'm going to have to pay extra for language lessons after this!! (This is basically my miserly, mercenary motive in taking 101.)

Below is my favorite Tokyo subway safety poster:
