Just wanted to share a little bit of what I do as a 大学院生 this semester, when not in 日本ごじゅうぎゅが:

PE 3: Reflection on PE 2 + Goals

Reflections on PE 2
  • I'm pretty much at the same place as the last update, which is that my reading/speaking speed are still pretty slow. It needs more work, but where is this 大学院生 going to find the time?! :(
Goals
  • To increase my conversational fluency, as well as reading and writing speed.
  • To get better at using the correct particles in complex sentences.
Activities
  • Speak to fluent Japanese speakers for at least an hour a week: the Sensees, friends in Princeton, Skyping friends in Tokyo, et al.
  • Go to Shibata Sensee's and Tameyori Sensee's office hours whenever possible!

PE 2: Reflection on PE 1+ Goals

Reflections on PE 1
  • Am much better at distinguishing glides now, although my reading and speaking speed are still frustratingly slow! This was achieved by spending some time on the phone with bilingual Japanese friends.
Goals
  • To increase my conversational fluency, as well as reading and writing speed.
  • To get better at using the correct particles in complex sentences.
Activities
  • Speak to fluent Japanese speakers for at least an hour a week: the Sensees, friends in Princeton, Skyping friends in Tokyo, et al.

PE 1: Goals + Activities

Goals
  • To better distinguish the difference between long vowels, glides, and double consonant sounds.
  • To increase my conversational fluency, and to use the correct pitch and rhythm when speaking.
Activities
  • Practice speaking the current chapter's vocabulary 3 times a week.
  • Speak to fluent Japanese speakers for at least an hour a week: the Sensees, friends in Princeton, Skyping friends in Tokyo, et al.
